Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – East Java and Jakarta reported the lowest daily number of coronavirus cases in months on Wednesday amid the highly fluctuating figures at the national level, according to the latest data from the Health Ministry.

Jakarta, home to 25 percent of overall confirmed cases nationwide, has recorded 587 cases in the last 24 hours, the lowest one-day rise since August 19 and a sharp drop from more than 1,000 cases a day earlier. The capital city has a total of 114,343 cases, including 2,402 deaths.

East Java reported just 168 cases for a total 55,305. The last time it saw fewer cases in a day was on July 15. East Java has the highest number of coronavirus-related deaths since the outbreak, totaling 3,951 on Wednesday.

After a steady decline in newly cases for more than three weeks, Indonesia began to see an uptick with seven-day average climbing consistently since last Thursday.

Despite the dramatic drop in the two worst-affected provinces, Indonesia still added 3,770 more cases to take its total to 448,118. Of that figure, 54,300 or 12.1 percent are active cases.

The weekly trend is moving upward and approaching the previous peak in late September. The National Covid-19 Task Force said earlier the decline in previous weeks could have been attributable to a weakening in testing capacity.

The death toll rose by 75 for a total of 14,836, representing 3.3 percent of the overall cases.

West Java registered 668 new cases, for the first time since July 9 it beats the daily total in Jakarta. It has been averaging 500 cases since the beginning of the month and is ranked third with a total of 41,839 cases.

Central Java is the second province where the virus is spreading faster now than last month. It has been averaging 479 cases since Nov. 1, taking its tally to 39,180.

The virus has killed 1,906 people in Central Java since the outbreak, the third highest death toll after that of East Java and Jakarta.

Newly cases of coronavirus are also trending up in East Kalimantan, which overtook Riau to become the seventh province with the most cases.

East Kalimantan has a total of 16,149 cases, 345 more from yesterday.

The surge has been slowing in West Sumatra and Riau – the last two provinces to average three-digit daily numbers – since early this month.

But West Sumatra added 254 more cases, the highest daily rise of the month, for a total of 16,511. Riau reported 146 cases to take its total to 16,054.
