Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia has added 100,417 confirmed cases of coronavirus since the beginning of the month, with Jakarta taking a lion's share of 30 percent by averaging more than 1,000 cases per day.
The last four weeks have become the toughest period in the Indonesian coronavirus outbreak, as provinces on Sumatra Island began to experience a drastic surge in cases while worst-hit provinces on the densely-populated island of Java remain unable to contain the transmissions.
The country now has a total of 275,213 cases, up by 3,874 from a day earlier. It's the lowest daily number in ten days to end a six-day run of more than 4,000 cases per day.
Daily death toll also fell to the lowest number in two weeks, with 78 for a total of 10,386 or 3.8 percent of total cases.
The number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients has reached 203,014 as of Sunday, 3,461 more from yesterday.
Jakarta passes 70,000 mark
Jakarta has recorded the biggest caseloads throughout the month, adding more than 30,000 cases to take its total to 70,441 – including 1,686 deaths – as of Sunday.
The capital city has been averaging 1,124 cases since Sept. 1, in comparison to the average of 603 in August.
Newly cases are slowing down a bit in East Java, where daily numbers have fallen below 300 for the third day in a row.
It has recorded a total of 42,890 cases since the outbreak, second only to Jakarta. But East Java has the highest death toll, with a total of 3,118 Covid-19 deaths.
Central Java saw its daily average almost double from the August average, 284 against 143. It has recorded a total of 21,626 cases of the virus and 1,389 deaths as of Sunday.
West Java came next with 20,954 cases and 387 deaths. However, judged by its September performance, West Java had the fastest growth of newly cases among the top four provinces.
Daily average in West Java has jumped by 151 percent to 366 in September from the previous month. It has recorded 9,800 cases since the start of the month to quickly narrow the gap from Central Java.
The September caseload in West Java is the second-highest after Jakarta, whose daily average also increases by 87 percent.
Combined cases from the four provinces alone make up 57 percent of the national tally.
Surge in Sumatra
Several provinces in Sumatra have been enduring their worst period with cases spreading at the fastest speed. Riau has seen the most dramatic surge than any other provinces – its total number of cases on Sunday is more than triple the number on August 31.
Riau, which only recently joined the top ten of provinces with the most cases, has the biggest caseloads in September after the big four. It has added nearly 5,000 cases since the start of the month to take its total to 6,780.
West Sumatra and Aceh have more than doubled their total number of Covid-19 cases this month from their position in late August.
Meanwhile, North Sumatra becomes the seventh province to have passed the 10,000 mark, although its daily numbers have been slowing to two digits in the past week.
Two other provinces that have reached four-digit figures are South Sulawesi (15,295) and South Kalimantan (10,197).
Other hotspots
Banten, just west of Jakarta, reported an 82 percent rise in the total number of cases to 5,290 on Sunday from 2,903 on August 1. Daily total in the province have been hitting three digits since Sept. 16 as testing capacity began to improve.
Two other hotspots in the top ten, Bali and East Kalimantan, have added 3,325 cases and 3,966 cases, respectively, in the last four weeks.
Bali is ranked eight with a total of 8,562 cases, followed by East Kalimantan (3,966).
Overall, Indonesia has 61,813 active cases across all 34 provinces.
