Indonesia adds 3,300 Covid-19 cases, Bali sees 100 pct rise in weekly total

Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia has reported 3,307 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours to take the country's total to 203,342, with the surge coming mostly from four worst-affected provinces in Java and Bali, according to the Health Ministry.

The total figure includes 8,336 deaths, 106 more from a day earlier.

The daily caseload has reached a new level since the beginning of the month, averaging more than 3,000.

Combined cases from the five provinces account for 64 percent of the national count on Wednesday.

Jakarta added 1,004 cases for a total of 49,397, including 1,334 deaths.

East Java reported the highest daily toll with 38 in the 24 hour-period, bringing its total death toll to 2,646. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the province jumped by 370 for a total of 36,712.

Central Java is at a distant third with 16,133 cases, 281 more from yesterday. It also has the third-biggest number of Covid-19 deaths, totaling 1,106.

West Java saw 288 new cases to take its total to 13,333.

While Bali is ranked eight in the total number of confirmed cases, its growth in new cases has been the fastest in the past week.

Bali's total number of new cases in the last seven-day period has jumped by more than 100 percent, from 565 to 1,134, according to Wiku Adisasmito, the lead expert of the National Covid-19 Task Force.

The resort island recorded 174 more cases on Wednesday, taking its total to 6,723.

South Sulawesi, the only province outside Java to join the top five, registered 118 new cases for a total of 12,864.

Indonesia has nearly 50,000 active cases of the virus, while the number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients is more than 145,000.
