Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia reported 1,041 new coronavirus cases on Friday, taking its total confirmed cases to 43,803. The figure includes 2,373 deaths and 17.349 recovered patients, according to the National Covid-19 Task Force.

It is the fifth day in a row in which cases have jumped by above 1,000, including a record 1,331 yesterday.

Cases accumulated during the 19 days of this month have surpassed the total figure throughout May, 17,331 against 16,352, a clear indication that the peak of the curve has yet to come in the Indonesian outbreak.

South Sulawesi for the first time led the single-day rise with 207 cases, taking its total to 3,537. Jakarta reported 141 cases in the day, just one more than East Java.

This is for the first time in the last ten days that the capital city has more daily cases than East Java, the current epicenter of the outbreak.

Overall, Jakarta has the most cases among the country's 34 provinces, standing at 9,655 on Friday. East Java comes second with 9,057 cases while South Sulawesi is at a distant third.

In terms of active cases, however, East Java has outnumbered Jakarta – where nearly half of the total cases have recovered – since last week.

Only 2,562 Covid-19 patients in East Java or 28 percent of total cases have been cured or discharged from hospitals.

Total Covid-19 cases in East Java included 678 deaths, 100 more than the fatalities in Jakarta.

Six provinces reported no new cases in the day, including Aceh, Bangka-Belitung, Central Kalimantan, Riau Islands, West Sulawesi and East Nusa Tenggara.

Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra Island, has a total of only 38 confirmed cases so far.

Task force spokesman Achmad Yurianto claimed the number of Covid-19 testing again exceeded the daily target of 20,000 for the second day in a row.
