Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Indonesia reported a record number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients on Sunday, with 755 being declared free from coronavirus in the 24-hour period.
Overall, the number of recovered Covid-19 patients stood at 14,531. The daily number of recovered patients has surpassed 510 during the last six days. The previous record high was 715 on June 10.
Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus increased by 857 on Sunday to a total of 38,277, including 2,138 deaths, according to the National Covid-19 Task Force. That means that the country still has 21,608 active cases across all 34 provinces.
Five worst-hit provinces – Jakarta, East Java, South Sulawesi, West Java and Central Java – account for 63 percent of overall cases countrywide. Jakarta tops the list with 8,978 cases but East Java is catching up quickly.
Both provinces were separated by over 3,600 cases on May 10 and the gap fell to 1,185 on Sunday.
Throughout this month, East Java has registered 1,221 more cases than the national capital.
East Java again reported the highest spike in a day, with 196 new Covid-19 cases to bring the province's total to 7,793.
South Sulawesi, the third most affected province, now has 2,840 cases, 133 more from yesterday.
Jakarta has 117 new cases and Central Java is the last province to report a three-digit figure in the day, with 113 more cases to a total of 2,059.
"Covid-19 cases continue to surge as regional governments intensify their efforts to trace contacts," task force spokesman Achmad Yurianto said in a video conference in Jakarta.
He added 15 provinces reported less than 10 new cases each and six others had none. The respiratory disease has now spread in 430 of the country's 514 districts and cities.
Achmad said 18,769 specimen tests have been conducted since Saturday, still below the testing capacity target of 20,000 per day.
