Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Indonesia increased by 1,014 on Saturday, the fourth time the country saw more than 1,000 daily cases this week since it reached that milestone on Tuesday.

The increase brought the total number of cases to 37,420, including 2,091 deaths and 13,776 cured Covid-19 patients since the outbreak in early March, according to the National Covid-19 Task Force.

Southeast Asia's biggest country has been experiencing its toughest period of the outbreak since the start of the month and within 13 days the number of cases has reached a 29 percent share of the overall cases.

Hotspots like East Java, South Sulawesi, Jakarta and South Kalimantan reported three-digit figures in the day.

East Java has the highest spike with 176 new cases to bring the province's total to 7,597. Jakarta, which seemed to have been past its peak last month, reported 121 new cases and remained on top with 8,861 cases overall.

However, East Java has recorded 953 more cases than the capital city throughout this month. Furthermore, East Java has more deaths and fewer recoveries from the disease than the national capital in the overall figures.

East Java reported 589 deaths and 2,117 recovered patients, while Jakarta, which has the biggest quarantine facilities and some of the country's best infection disease hospitals, recorded 548 deaths and 3,840 cured patients.

The virus continued to spread fast in South Sulawesi and South Kalimantan, where cases jumped by 125 and 123 on Saturday, respectively.

South Sulawesi surpassed West Java as the third most-affected province on Friday and extended lead with 2,707 cases against West Java's 2,587 cases on Saturday.

South Kalimantan has a total of 1,817 cases and is getting closer to Central Java (1,946) on the fifth spot.

The country is still facing woeful testing capacity with only around 313,200 people of a population of more than 272 million having tested for the virus.

On a more positive note, 18 provinces reported fewer than 10 cases each on Saturday, while five others had none.
