Indonesia reports 1,111 new coronavirus cases

Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus increased by 1,111 in Indonesia on Friday to bring the total number of infections in the country to 36,406.

It's the third time daily cases have surpassed the 1,000 mark, all occurring this week.

The country also reported 48 deaths from coronavirus in the 24-hour period, taking the total death toll to 2,048. The number of recovered and discharged Covid-19 patients rose by 577 to a total of 13,213.

East Java is the main contributor of new cases with 318 in the day, in comparison to just 93 in Jakarta.

South Sulawesi reported 88 new cases to take the province's total to 2,582 and surpass West Java as the third most-affected province after Jakarta and East Java.

South Sulawesi now has 10 more cases than West Java, which has five times as many people.

Jakarta has recorded 8,740 cases overall, including 540 deaths and 3,781 recoveries.

East Java has 7,421 cases but a higher death toll and much fewer recoveries compared to the national capital, amounting to 575 and 1,865 respectively.
