Heru AndriyantoJakarta – Indonesia reported 50 more deaths from coronavirus on Sunday, bringing the total death toll to 1,851.

That represents 5.9 percent of 31,186 confirmed Covid-19 cases overall. Only in five occasions have daily coronavirus deaths reached 50 or more since the outbreak began in Indonesia in early March.

The number of patients recovering from the disease hit another single-day record of 591, taking the total recoveries to 10,498.

New Covid-19 cases increased by 672 in the 24-hour period, a significant drop from a record 993 cases a day earlier.

Jakarta saw the highest rise in the day with 163 new cases, taking the capital city's total to 8,033. East Java, the second most-affected province, has 5,948 cases, 113 more from yesterday.

New hotspots

Jakarta has managed to reduce its share in the nationwide coronavirus cases from around 50 percent in the wake of the pandemic to 25.8 percent today, as epicenter of the outbreak is moving to East Java and South Sulawesi.

President Joko Widodo said earlier the two provinces along with South Kalimantan should get "special attention" from his health officials as infections of the virus have been growing faster there than in other provinces in recent weeks.

The president sent three top health officials to the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar on Sunday to assess the situation and find out what the central government can do to help the provincial government contain the outbreak.

They included National Covid-19 Task Force head Doni Monardo, Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto and Coordinating Minister for Human Development Muhadjir Effendy.

The high-level team also carried medical supplies for South Sulawesi including surgical masks, medical gloves, coronavirus testing kits and blood plasma from Covid-19 survivors that can be used as therapy to increase immune system of patients.

South Sulawesi and South Kalimantan are the only provinces outside the country's most densely populated island of Java to join the top six with the most cases.

There is also a growing concern about Papua, who has more cases than Banten. The easternmost province with a population of less than 4 million has 1,064 cases. Banten, just south of Jakarta and with a population of around 11 million people, has 1,035 cases.
