Timor-Leste wants to extend state of emergency because of Covid-outbreak in Indonesia

Tempo Timor - May 27, 2020

Dili – The Council of Ministers has approved the request from the Integrated Crisis Management Centre (Sentru Integradu Jestaun Krize – SIJK) for the extension of the state of emergency with 30 more days.

After this decision, the Council of Ministers will request the president of the republic, Francisco Guterres Lu Olo, and the president will solicit the National Parliament for authorization to decree the state of emergency for another 30 days.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, which killed 342,070 of people around the world, Timor-Leste has been in a state of emergency. The first period started on 28 March until 26 April 2020. The second period started on 28 April and will end on 27 May 2020.

The extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers (CM) approved and requested the president to extend the state of emergency (SoE), www.tempotimor.com learned today during a press conference. "CM decided to solicit to the president to extend the SoE for 30 more days, because the second SoE will end on the 27th of May," the CM said in a written statement on Monday (25/05).

The letter explains that the government's request for the extension of the state of emergency is because of the severity of the COVID-19 outbreak in neighbouring Indonesia.

"The necessity to extend the SoE is a solution to the epidemiology and the proliferation of cases of infection of COVID-19 which is high across the western border with neighbouring country Indonesia. Since there is no means to stop the pandemic, the only way to minimize the transmission is the State of Emergency," the Council of Ministers stated.

According to the Council of Ministers, there is a need to extend the state of emergency because it is the only possible means to contribute to the prevention of new active cases in Timor-Leste.

As of 25 May 2020, the total confirmed cases in Indonesia increased with 526 new cases to a total of 22,271 cases, according to the statistics accessed by www.tempotimor.com. Of these Covid-19-cases 5402 people recovered, while 1372 people died in Indonesia because of the virus.

In Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), which across Timor-Leste's western border, there are 79 Covid-cases, 6 recovered cases and 1 patient died.
