East Timor confirms ten new COVID-19 patients

Dili – In just one day East Timor confirmed another ten COVID-19 cases, which brings the total number of patients who suffer from the disease to eighteen.

"Today we have in total confirmed 18 cases, comprising 17 Timorese and one European citizen who has recovered," stated Odete da Silva Viegas, the spokeswoman of the Integrated Crisis Management Centre (Sentru Integradu Jestaun Krize – SIJK) in her address to the media in the Convention Centre in Dili (16/4).

"Those of our friends who are confirmed to be infected with the corona virus, all come from the so called red zone," she said, referring to Indonesia. After their arrival in East Timor "most of them were in quarantine in the Katuas hotel" in Dili, she explained.

The SIJK expressed its concern about a lack of medical equipment to help those who are suffering from the corona disease. "We need 2600 ventilators but for now we only have one," stated SIJK-coordinator Pedro Klamar Fuik before East Timor Parliament this morning.

In the meantime the Integrated Crisis Management Centre told East Timor Parliament an estimation which saying nationwide 13,000 Timorese may be infected with the corona-virus.

So far there are 567 people in quarantine and 12 cases are under testing.
