Labors plan nationwide strike against Omnibus on Job Creation

Budiarti Utami Putri, Jakarta – Congress Alliance of Indonesian Labor Unions (KASBI) chairwoman Nining Elitos said that workers' unions are planning on commencing a nationwide strike in protest of the omnibus job creation bill, known as the RUU Cipta Kerja the government is attempting to pass.

"We encourage other regions to hold similar protests toward a national strike," said Nining at the Menteng area in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, March 4.

According to Nining, regional workers and labor unions have formed alliances in for the strikes, such as the Banten United Labor's Union (AB3), Jakarta's Labor's People Movement (Gebrak), and the Indonesian People Faction.

However, she has yet named a date for the planned national strike as the plan is in development, "We are in consolidation with each other."

Nining said that the unions urge the Indonesian government to stop applying repressive ways in dispersing public protests, as the protest on Wednesday, March 4, that saw 10 labor workers joined in the anti-omnibus job creation bill rally apprehended by authorities.

"No one is siding with the people anymore but is providing the red carpet for the [interest of investors]," said the Congress Alliance of Indonesian Labor Unions chairwoman.
