Ahmad Faiz Ibnu Sani, Jakarta – The general secretary of the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI), Anwar Abbas, says that the participants of the 7th Indonesian Islamic Ulama Congress see the Draft Omnibus Law on Job Creation as only prioritising the interests of employers and business.

"Meanwhile the interests of workers and the ordinary people are ignored", said Abbas when contacted by Tempo in Sunday March 1.

Abbas said that if the government wants to pass the draft law, then the Congress is asking that the law be made to bring prosperity and welfare to the ordinary people.

"It needs to be known that we [carry out] development not in the interests of a handful of people but so it can be enjoyed by all the people", he said.

Abbas is appealing to the government not to listen to the voices of employers and business when formulating the draft law but instead listen to the general public.

"Moreover the government was elected and given a mandate by the ordinary people for this, the government must also work for the people and to create the greatest possible prosperity for them", he said.

One of the recommendations of the Congress which was held on February 26-29 in Bangka Belitung province was to reject the Draft Omnibus Law on Job Creation.

In addition to this, the Congress also rejected the Draft Law on Family Resilience and called for the Agency for Pancasila Ideology Education (BPIP) to be dissolved.
