Purworejo Police arrest self-proclaimed king and queen of 'Agung Sejagat'

Jakarta Post - January 15, 2020

Jakarta – The Purworejo Police arrested on Tuesday afternoon Totok Santoso Hadiningrat and Fanni Aminadia, residents of Purworejo regency in Central Java, who recently declared themselves the "king and queen" of the so-called Keraton Agung Sejagat kingdom. The couple was immediately taken to Purworejo Police headquarters for questioning.

The police also searched the building that served as the "palace" in Pogung Jurutengah village, Bayan district, where Totok declared himself as the king of Keraton Agung Sejagat, "the mother of all states".

Purworejo military district commander Lt. Col. Muchlis Gasim confirmed the arrest.

"It's true, the 'king and queen of Keraton Agung Sejagat' have been detained by the [Purworejo] police," Muchlis said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Tuesday.

Separately, Central Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Iskandar Fitriana Sutisna said that Totok and his wife were arrested for allegedly spreading a hoax and charged with violating Article 14 of Law No. 1/1946 on misinformation, which carried a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, kompas.com reported on Wednesday.

Totok announced the existence of the kingdom on Sunday. He claimed that Keraton Agung Sejagat – which means "world empire" – had about 425 subjects and would be a "peacemaker" that would resolve "all conflicts occurring all over the world" by improving global governance and monetary systems.

The "royal advisor", Resi Joyodiningrat, said that the couple hoped their "subjects" would not worry about the "kingdom", because Keraton Agung Sejagat was not a sect.

He added that Keraton Agung Sejagat was founded 500 years ago, when Dyah Ranawijaya, the Majapahit king, controlled much of maritime Southeast Asia during the kingdom's peak in the 13th century.

According to Resi, King Ranawijaya made a pact with the Portuguese in 1518, and that end of the pact in 2018 marked the end of Western world domination since World War II.

Purworejo regency spokesperson Rita Purnama said there were indications that the kingdom was a fraud.

"Much of the story [about Keraton Agung Sejagat] does not correspond with history," she said. (hol)
