Nurhadi, Surabaya – Thousands of students joined in Surabaya Student Executive Body (BEM) Alliance staged demonstrations, rejecting the amended KPK Law and Criminal Code draft bill at the East Java Legislative Council (DPRD) building, Jalan Indrapura, Wednesday, September 25.

Donning university jackets, they gathered before the building at 11 a.m. Students oath and the song "Darah Juang" marked the beginning of the rally. Each head of BEM took turns to deliver a speech on a car.

Half an hour after the protest took place, the situation began to be out of order. Students tried to enter the building by damaging the wire fence installed outside the gate and demanded the police to open the barriers.

A moment later, they managed to break through and directly faced the authorities. The police then invited the student representatives to deliver their demands using the police speaker.

They voiced six demands such as urge the government to issue a president's regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to replace the newly-ratified KPK Law by the House and reject the Criminal Code draft bill, the manpower draft bill, and the land draft bill.

The university students also demand the government thoroughly investigate land and forest fires, resolve conflicts in Papua and hold dialogues.
