Jakarta (Antara) – Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) Commander Air Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto and Indonesian National Police (Polri) Chief General Tito Karnavian attended an interreligious assembly today held in the capital of Papua Province, Jayapura.
Head of the Religious Ministry's regional headquarters Amsel Yowei opened the assembly by reading out the reports on the Interfaith Communication Forum (FKUB) of Papua that called on people to fight against racism and demonstrations that would lead to anarchic behaviors.
Another issue discussed in the FKUB assembly was the Papuan students studying abroad. He appealed to dormitory managements to protect and pay close attention to the students' education.
The meeting also strongly called on the government to lift the internet blackout that was imposed on the region. However, the government announced that it had lifted the blackout as of today.
The meeting between interreligious figures also called on the public to stop spreading fake information and always research any information they receive before sharing it further to bigger crowds.
On August 29, areas in Papua and West Papua saw massive and widespread demonstrations happening across the city as a response to an act of racism experienced by Papuan college students in Surabaya several days prior.
