Andita Rahma, Jakarta – National Police are currently investigating reports of foreigners support for the Free Papua Movement (OPM). Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian has earlier exposed the involvement of foreign people in the string of riots in Papua and West Papua.
"We are examining it. We cannot spill it. We suspect outsiders are trying to provoke [the situation] and set agenda," said National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Mohammad Iqbal in his office, South Jakarta, Monday, September 2.
Iqbal suspected people joining the rallies had no idea about what happened. "There is an indication of a supervised provocation. We have set the map, we have marked the people," he said.
The police, Iqbal went on, have teamed up with Foreign Affairs Ministry, State Intelligence Agency (BIN), and all related institutions to probe the involvement of foreign parties.
Previously, the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) discovered foreign social media accounts that deliberately distributed hoaxes on conditions in Papua. The body's chief Hinsa Siburian said the accounts might belong to individuals or groups.
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Politics, Legal, and Security Wiranto said there were provocateurs during demonstrations in Papua and West Papua and claimed to have collected the names.
