Eliza Mcphee – A shocking social media advertisement has promoted female genital mutilation for just AU$10 in Indonesia.

The ad was shared to Facebook by community organisation Wahdah Islamiyah, who are based in the Jeneponto district, with the description urging viewers to enter their daughters 'in the name of God'.

Within a month of the disturbing advertisement being posted online, more than 100 girls aged between one and 14 had signed up.

The message read 'khitanan massal putri' which translates to 'women's mass circumcisions', offering the procedure for 100.000 Indonesian rupiah which is the equivalent to $10.40 Australian.

Female genital mutilation is common within rural towns in Indonesia with many parents subjecting their daughters to the brutal procedure as part of their Islamic beliefs.

It involves removing part or all of the female's external genitalia and is a common practice in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

'The clitoral membrane wrapped around the clitoris is cut open. That can increase sex hormones for women,' Henni Makkaraeng, a member of the female social and health division of Wahdah Islamiyah, told the ABC.

Ms Makkaraeng also said that the organisation would subsidise the payment for parents who couldn't afford the procedure's fee.

Bobby Hery Yudhanto, an Indonesian urology specialist, claimed that genital mutilation provided no benefit and in most cases can actually cause permanent damage. 'It can also cause the closure of her urine hole,' Mr Yudhanto said.

One father from West Java said he regretted having his daughter circumcised.

Horizon Parpatih claimed he realised he had made a mistake after noticing his wife, who had also been circumcised as a child, was unable to be sexually aroused. 'I am very sorry for ruining the future of my child's sexual life,' he said.

Female genital mutilation is currently legal in Indonesia despite attempts to ban the barbaric procedure.
