Suherdjoko, Semarang – The Central Java Education and Culture Agency has turned down the applications of 446 students who tried to enroll in state high schools in the province using fake addresses.

They were found to have falsified documents containing information on their place of residence during the joint registration process that used the zoning system. Aimed at equalizing the quality of state schools, the policy favors students who live closest to their proposed schools.

Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo said on Wednesday that the use of fake residency documents in the school enrollment was revealed following a confession made by a resident who said he was forced to issue the fake documents by one of the parents.

This year's new student enrollment nationwide uses a zoning system in which 70 percent of the new students are accepted solely based on their residency, 20 percent on student achievements within the respective zones, 5 percent on student achievements outside the zones and the remaining 5 percent because students' parents work in the respective zones.
