Lani Diana Wijaya, Jakarta – The government and the Jakarta capital administration plan to provide help to the asylum seekers currently dwelling in on the sidewalks of Kebon Sirih Road in Central Jakarta. Jakarta's Regional Legislative Council chairman Prasetio Edi Marsudi said that the effort is a humanitarian one.

The asylum seekers set up tents on the sidewalk to sleep during the night. Prasetio said they have been occupying Kebon Sirih for two weeks now.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) noted there are 241 immigrants sleeping on the roadside of Kebon Sirih. They are adults and children from Afghanistan, Somalia, and Sudan.

"We have to address the situation as it is disturbing all public facilities," he said on Tuesday night, July 9.

Prasetio said the immigrants will be relocated to the Islamic Center building in North Jakarta.

Prasetio said the Jakarta administration will also provide meals and health facilities to the immigrants, particularly sick children. These immigrants are in Indonesia without money, and they are legally prohibited to find work here.
