Jakarta – The police have deployed 6,226 officers to major areas of the capital to ensure public order and safety through June 13 as many residents return to their hometowns to celebrate the Idul Fitri holiday.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said officers had been deployed to anticipate and prevent any possible acts of terrorism.

On Monday evening, a suspected suicide bomber attempted a detonation at a police post in Kartasura, Central Java. Police are still investigating the motive behind the alleged suicide attack.

He added that the police officers' other priorities included overseeing traffic and guarding vital infrastructures in the city.

"We have collaborated with the Jakarta administration and the Indonesian Military to ensure security in the city during this year's Idul Fitri holiday," Argo said on Tuesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

"We are guarding mosques and other sites where Muslims usually observe the Idul Fitri prayer," he added.

Argo said that a police detachment had also been sent to guard popular tourist destinations like Ancol Beach and the Kota Tua (Old Town) area in North Jakarta, Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta, and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in East Jakarta.

"Ports, train stations and [bus] terminals will also be closely guarded," he added. (rfa/dmr)
