Info Tempo, Jakarta – PT PLN (Persero) signed an agreement with Amazon on Tuesday to develop new renewable energy (NRE) with a capacity of 210 megawatts (MW) of solar power plants (PLTS) in Indonesia. This agreement is a first for both companies to allow the addition of large-scale PLTS into the national power system.

Based on this agreement, Amazon will buy Indonesia's NRE powered through four solar panels built to support its operations in Indonesia. The four solar power projects will be located in Bali and Java on the Java-Madura-Bali powerline.

Amazon's commitment as an off-taker is a major driver for these projects, which allows PLN to introduce similar opportunities for other interested organizations, pioneering company-based NRE procurement in Indonesia.

The PLN initiative in renewable energy projects will bring Indonesia closer to achieving its net zero emissions target by 2060.

"PLN is fully committed to supporting the government's program to implement clean energy and accelerate it with a clear roadmap to achieve this mission. This collaboration between the private and public sector is a key to ensuring clean and affordable energy in the future," said Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director of PT PLN (Persero), in a written statement, Tuesday, November 15.

PLN will build four new utility-scale power plants that are included in the 2021-2030 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) which is said to be the greenest RUPTL in history, with the addition of 20.9 gigawatts of renewable energy power plants.

"With this agreement, we support Amazon towards powering 100 percent of its operations with renewable energy, and hope this initiative will inspire future collaboration with multinational companies with other high-ranking environmentally friendly companies," added Prasodjo.

Meanwhile, Carly Wishart, Amazon Director of Planning, Delivery & Implementing Data Center for Asia-Pacific, Japan & China said this first collaboration with Indonesia is on track with Amazon's plan to fully power its operations with renewable energy.

Amazon is committed to achieving net-zero carbon across its entire business by 2040 and is heading there to drive its operations with 100 percent NRE by 2025.

"PLN and Amazon's team have worked together to open up new ways for companies to get EBT domestically. The EBT project will supply energy for Amazon's operations in Indonesia and help Amazon achieve its net zero carbon emissions goal across its business by 2040. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with PLN to allow more renewable energy projects in Indonesia," Wishart said.

Currently, Amazon is the world's largest renewable energy buyer with 383 NRE projects worldwide. In Asia, Amazon has invested in 15 large-scale renewable energy projects with a total capacity of more than 1,300 MW across Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Singapore.

Once Amazon's 383 renewable energy projects are fully operating, each is expected to lower more than 18.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions per year. This renewable energy project will supply energy to Amazon's company headquarters, Amazon service centers, and AWS data centers that support millions of subscribers globally.
